I'm Matt

a person-centered therapist.

You've taken a courageous and positive step in seeking a therapist to work with. Sometimes it can be hard to find the strength to reach out and ask for support - I've been there! With a warm and non-judgemental approach, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I am a fully qualified, insured and GDPR/ICO-registered counsellor. The clients and presenting issues that I work with are diverse, though I'm particularly interested in helping people cope with life changes & relationships, along with helping my clients manage anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. I have a solid working knowledge of the person-centred approach, and this allows me to provide a personalised and empathetic relationship that is tailored to the unique needs of each individual. This type of counselling puts you in control and the sessions are led by yourself - I won't tell you what we should talk about or assume I know more about you than you do. You are the expert in your own life, after all! We will work together to help you to identify what you would like to change and how you might be able to do that within a safe space.

One of the many joys of person-centred therapy, and the pluralistic approach that I adopt, is that it can be tailored to support and gain insight on a wide variety of issues. Whilst I would consider myself a generalist capable of supporting with a diverse range of different issues, the ones I most commonly work with, and therefore have the most experience with, are as follows:

  • Anxiety
  • Despression
  • Coping with life changes
  • Life direction and finding meaning
  • Low self-esteem
  • Motivation
  • Neurodiversity
  • Relationship issues
  • Sexuality
  • Substance use issues and addiction

What is Person-centered Therapy?

Person-centred counselling is a type of therapy that helps you talk about your feelings and problems in a safe and supportive environment. Imagine you have a friendly guide who listens to you without judging, and helps you understand your own thoughts and emotions better. In person-centred counselling, you are considered the expert on your own life. The counsellor believes that you have the ability to understand yourself and find your own solutions. The counsellor creates a space where you feel safe and accepted. This means you can talk about anything that’s on your mind without worrying about being judged or criticized. In this type of counselling, the counsellor doesn’t tell you what to do or give you advice. Instead, they listen and help you explore your own thoughts and feelings, and help facilitate you to come to your own solutions and ways forward. This helps you gain new insights and find your own answers.

There are Three Key Qualities:

  • Empathy: The counsellor tries to really understand how you feel, putting themselves in your shoes.
  • Genuineness: This is sometimes known as congruence. The counsellor is honest and real with you, not pretending to be someone they’re not
  • Unconditional Positive Regard: The counsellor accepts you for who you are, no matter what you say or do. They respect and value you as a person.

The goal of person-centred therapy is to help you understand yourself better, feel more confident, and make positive changes in your life. By talking things through, you can discover new perspectives and solutions that you might not have considered before. In simple terms, person-centred counselling is like having a caring, non-judgmental friend who listens and helps you find your own way. It’s all about you, your feelings, and your journey to feeling better.
